Treatment Modalities

Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR)

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR is a highly effective psychological treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health conditions. It is based on the understanding that unprocessed memories from stressful or traumatic experiences contribute to negative thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

This evidence-based approach involves focusing on a distressing memory, along with its associated thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations, while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation through guided eye movements. This process is thought to replicate the brain's natural memory processing during REM sleep, helping to reduce the emotional intensity of the memory and facilitate its integration. As traumatic memories are desensitised and reprocessed, they lose their distressing impact, becoming less vivid and intrusive. Symptoms such as nightmares and flashbacks diminish or disappear, allowing for the development of healthier, more adaptive beliefs.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

What is CBT?

CBT is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that focuses on the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. CBT helps individuals identify and challenge unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours that may be contributing to emotional distress. Through developing practical coping strategies and more balanced ways of thinking, CBT aims to improve emotional wellbeing, build resilience, and support lasting behavioural change. CBT is commonly used to treat concerns such as anxiety, depression, stress, trauma-related difficulties, and low self-esteem.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

What is ACT?

ACT is a mindfulness-based therapeutic approach that helps individuals develop greater psychological flexibility. ACT encourages individuals to accept difficult thoughts and emotions rather than fight against them, while learning strategies to reduce the impact these experiences have on daily life. The therapy focuses on helping individuals clarify their values and take meaningful action aligned with the life they want to live. ACT is commonly used to support individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, chronic pain, and difficulties with self-esteem or avoidance behaviours.

Schema Therapy

What is Schema Therapy?

Schema Therapy is an integrative therapeutic approach designed to help individuals identify and change longstanding patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that often develop in childhood or early life experiences. These patterns, known as “schemas”, can negatively impact relationships, self-esteem, emotional regulation, and coping strategies. Schema Therapy combines elements of CBT, attachment theory, psychodynamic therapy, and experiential techniques to support deeper emotional healing and lasting change. It is commonly used in the treatment of chronic anxiety, depression, trauma, personality difficulties, and longstanding relational or emotional challenges.

Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT)

What is SFT?

SFT is a strengths-based and goal-oriented therapeutic approach that focuses on identifying solutions rather than dwelling on problems. The therapy encourages individuals to recognise their existing strengths, resources, and past successes in order to create meaningful change. Rather than extensively exploring the origins of difficulties, SFT supports individuals to clarify their goals, identify what is already working, and develop practical strategies to move forward. This approach can be helpful for a wide range of concerns including anxiety, stress, relationship difficulties, adjustment challenges, and building confidence and resilience

Brainspotting

What is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process trauma, emotional distress, and other deeply held experiences by identifying specific eye positions, or “brainspots” that are linked to emotional activation in the brain and body. The approach is based on the understanding that where a person looks can influence access to stored traumatic experiences and unresolved emotions. Through focused attunement and processing, Brainspotting aims to support the brain and nervous system to process and release distress in a safe and contained way. It is commonly used in the treatment of trauma, anxiety, stress, performance issues, grief, and emotional regulation difficulties.

Motivational Interviewing

What is Motivational Interviewing (MI)?

Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative and client-centred therapeutic approach designed to strengthen a person’s motivation and confidence to make positive changes. The approach focuses on exploring and resolving ambivalence, helping individuals identify their own reasons for change in a supportive and non-judgemental environment. MI emphasises empathy, autonomy, and building self-efficacy, while supporting clients to work towards goals that align with their values and priorities. It is commonly used in the treatment of addictions, health behaviour change, anxiety, lifestyle concerns, and improving engagement in therapy and treatment.
